Scrimshaw Thimbles by Anouk Johanna

The following thimbles were commissioned by thimble collectors and are one-of-a-kind artworks. Even though some of the designs are repeated they are always slightly different. All of these thimbles were sold but any of them could be ordered again if so desired.

The price for the sepia (monochrome) designs is $325.00 plus $15.00 for the custom-made kokobolo wooden stand which forms a perfect fit for the thimble. The price for most of the multi-colored ones is $425.00 plus $15.00 for the stand. Sometimes a design is more elaborate and the price will reflect this.

Every thimble is slightly different in size since they are hand-made and the design is adapted to this. Engraving on a ivory is difficult because you work "white on white" with only the shadow of the engraved lines as a guide. Engraving in the round is much more difficult because you also have to constantly move the surface in order to see what you are doing. On the average a design in the round takes twice as long as a design on a flat surface.

When I do a scrimshaw thimble I make sure that the images are "connected" and - if possible to form a "story" when you turn the thimble around.

Custom work is always welcome and will be done in the order received.

Fossilized mammoth thimble ( dimensions: 1 - 1/4 inch high with a diameter of about 1 inch at the base) with a hand-engraved and painted image of
"Christopher Robin, Pooh, Piglet and the rabbits".
Stands on a custom-made kokobolo wooden stand.
The top of the thimble is engraved as well.
