All ivory used is fossil mammoth ivory and was legally obtained. Mostly dug up in Alaska and Siberia, the fossil mammoth is at least 8,000 years old and could be up to 70,000 years old. For the pieces on stands I use primarily fossil walrus ivory which is found and excavated by Siberian Yupik Eskimos from their old village sites on the St Lawrence Island in the Bering Strait of Alaska. Scrimshaw is the art of engraving the surface of ivory or bone and one of the few white American folk arts originally popularized by Yankee whalers. However modern scrimshaw with its perfected and newly developed techniques has evolved far beyond the scope of the sometimes crude "antique" pieces and can be placed rightfully into the realm of Fine Art.
